The National Merit Scholastic Awards Program
Every year, high school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. In the coming months, these students are expected to take the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT, or a competing test, to see if they are eligible to compete. On July 1, a committee will review these test scores and select about 2,500 juniors and seniors to compete for a chance to win an annual $2,500 scholarship.
Of these, about 8,000 juniors will be offered an opportunity to win one of around 1,000 National Merit Scholarships. What’s on the Winning Scholarships List? The 1,000 scholarships that will be awarded to the highest scoring candidates will be a combination of cash and merit-based scholarships. There are two types of scholarships that will be awarded to National Merit scholarship winners.

The scholarship program provides recognition and financial assistance to high school students who have excelled in the classroom. They get awards of up to $500 and trips to national competitions. These students go on to compete for colleges and scholarships, as well as jobs and internships.

How To Get A D-1 Basketball Scholarship
Obviously the most popular game in the United States is Basketball which have lots of young people living great with it. With this the competition to become a star in this field gets even bigger and bigger. However, scholarships placed for most of this tournament becomes a big factor and here we go with how to get a D-1 scholarship.
The Recruiting Process
When recruiting, many coaches will put together a package that is notated by coaches or athletic directors at the basketball powerhouse programs. A basketball recruiting package usually consists of player stats, highlight video, a picture, and sometimes even a player bio. For years, parents have thought that getting that first scholarship or financial aid award will be their ticket to success. Sadly, this does not happen for most basketball players. The majority of scholarship recipients were not on scholarship in middle school. Most parents and players are shocked that scholarships are not awarded from the start. However, the recruiting process is long and the coaches have to watch the athletes on their teams who could be the next player to earn a scholarship.
How to showcase your skills as a basketball player
It’s important to remember that you are trying to be a college athlete and your hard work is going to be under-appreciated unless you show it with your game. College coaches are going to notice any player who shows dedication, motivation and the ability to improve. College coaches are looking for the student athlete who doesn’t take a single rep off and who has the discipline to be successful. You should also watch as many games as possible. This is the best way to learn the best plays and the types of moves you can use to score on the basketball court. You can also talk to the coaches, watch film with them and then practice and develop your game. While most college coaches would love to watch a few games on tape, it’s rare for any coach to be able to do this.
What you need to know about NCAA Eligibility
The main difference between being a D1 basketball player and a D1 football player is that basketball players are not allowed to play any organized contact sports until their freshman year of high school. In fact, when I played D1 football in college, I would be called to school from practice every night at 10:00pm. Also, during my time at Morehouse, I received scholarship offers from the NCAA schools, but then other colleges would offer D1 basketball scholarships because they could offer me my preferred (post-graduate) major of Pharmacy. I ended up choosing the school that had the best basketball offer, but I was the only D1 football player to receive an offer in college.
This is where the vast majority of basketball players end up. The average high school player can expect to go overseas to play overseas for 3-6 months. There are even some high-profile players who have played professionally in China and in Europe. Playing overseas is highly competitive because basketball players have to be well-prepared and competitive to not only be able to make a living from it but also to also have a shot at being noticed by colleges. High School Offer It is often said that a 3-star college basketball player may only receive around 7-10 Division 1 basketball scholarship offers. As a result, many young players are pressured into accepting Division 1 scholarships.
Finding the best high school players, finding the best colleges, finding the best scholarship programs, and securing the most impressive scholarships for the upcoming season of high school basketball is no easy task. But remember, being a great high school basketball player is more than just being good at basketball; it is about putting in the work required to get noticed, develop as a student athlete, and to succeed academically. Think about it, who do you want to be? The higher the level of competition, the better you will get. And the more you will ultimately be able to get paid for playing basketball. So if you play competitive basketball, you will be able to get a great paying job playing basketball.
